Ohlsson launched his career in 1970 when he became the first American to win the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition. He is an Avery Fisher Prize laureate, placing him alongside such luminaries as Midori and Yo-Yo Ma, and a Grammy Award winner for his recording of Beethoven Sonatas. This is Ohlsson’s fourth performance with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and first since 1989. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvorák’s glorious "New World” Symphony.

Adler Theatre, Davenport
MARK RUSSELL SMITH, conductor
ERIN KEEFE, violin

PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique”

A compelling artist who combines exhilarating temperament and fierce integrity, violinist Erin Keefe has performed with the top orchestras of the world and has won competitions in North America, Europe, and Asia. Now the Quad Cities has its chance to experience this "impressive violin soloist” (The New York Times) in one of the greatest concerto masterpieces–Brahms’ luminous Violin Concerto which practically overflows with rich melodies and joyous dances. Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique,” Tchaikovsky’s final work, swings from exuberance to heart-rending despair, suffering, and loss. It is the capstone to a career filled with wild success and deep disappointment. Some even believe the symphony, a deeply personal piece, foretold his mysterious death only nine days after its premiere.
