The Symphony will be holding auditions on all instruments for the Youth Symphony Orchestra and Youth Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8 at Augustana College. 

 

These auditions are for new members only.  Students who are currently in one of our ensembles are not elidgable to audition.  Audition times must be scheduled by contacting Rebecca Swartz at 563.322.0931.

 

WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS?
To audition for membership in either the Youth Symphony Orchestra or the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, a player must play a standard orchestral instrument and meet these restrictions:

 

All students interested in auditioning should be in grades 6-12 for the 2011-112 school year.

 

If you are unsure which ensemble you should audition for ,our teacher may be able to suggest which orchestra is better for you to audition.  For strings, at least 5th position for Youth Symphony Orchestra and at least 3rd position for Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

 

WHAT DO I PLAY FOR AUDITIONS?
1. Perform a short solo work for your instrument, approximately 2 minutes long. [Solos may be school contest solos, excerpts from larger solos, or any solo selection which shows your skill. Solos do not have to be memorized. Solos should be performed unaccompanied.]

2. Perform the required 2011-12 orchestral excerpts for your instrument listed below:

 

 

 

 

3. Play a scale (strings only):

Violin, Viola, and Cello auditionees should play a 3-octave scale in C major at quarter note = m.m. 60

Bass auditionees should play a 2-octave scale in G major at quarter note = m.m. 60

 

Violin auditionees should play a 2-octave scale in G major at quarter note = m.m. 60

Viola and Cello auditionees should play a 2-octave scale in C major at quarter note = m.m. 60
Bass auditionees should play a 2-octave scale in G major at quarter note = m.m. 60
